Cesc Fabregas' friend and Spanish countryman Xabi Alonso clearly feels
terrible after consigning the newly-named Arsenal skipper to four
months on the sidelines.
The Liverpool midfielder meant young
Cesc no harm as he tackled him in the pre-Christmas draw between the
Reds and the Gunners, but his challenge was a fateful one, as it
ruptured knee ligaments.
Now, crocked playmaker Fabregas has
revealed that his home phone is ringing off the hook - something he may
have to do with his phone as concerned Alonso obsessively tacks his
slow progress.
The skipper told Arsenal's official website: "Since the Liverpool game, Xabi Alonso has called me every day.
"He
is very worried, but I told him that he had nothing to do with it. He
just tried to win the ball, the same as me, and these things happen.
"As
a footballer who is lucky to be able to play and enjoy what I do every
week, you always take the risk that injuries can occur."
Musing
over his mixed blessing - doctors quickly informed the 21-year-old that
his injury could have been much, much worse - Fabregas continued: "When
the tackle came in last Sunday, I felt the pain in my knee. I started
walking, but I couldn’t put my foot on the ground and I knew it was not
good.
"Still, worse things can take place in life. I’ve been
very healthy in the last five years and this injury could have been
worse... I have to feel fortunate."
