Shay Given has rocked Newcastle United with the news that he is considering his position at the club following interest shown in the Irishman by Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester City.
Given, 32, has made over 350 Premier League appearances for The Magpies following his arrival in May 1997 but now appears ready to leave Tyneside after a hugely-disappointing 5-1 defeat to Liverpool that highlighted the club’s plight this season.
The goalkeeper made a number of world class saves to keep the scoreline in single figures and his frustration was clear for all to see when he picked up a booking for booting the ball high into the stands following a corner award and stormed off the pitch at the final whistle.
Now the Republic of Ireland international has confirmed, via a statement from his solicitor, that he is deeply concerned at an impending relegation struggle and has hinted that he would welcome the chance to speak to Arsene Wenger, Harry Redknapp or Mark Hughes.
"Shay is very despondent following the very poor performance of the team against Liverpool last weekend," read Kennedy's statement.
"It was the lowest point of his football career and a performance that he would not wish to be repeated.
"When he signed a new five-year contract in 2006 it was on the basis that the club would challenge for major honours, but on the present evidence all that he can see ahead with the turmoil on and off the pitch is a battle for survival.
"Having served the club loyally for over 11 years, Shay feels compelled to consider his position in the light of the interest being expressed in him by Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham."
go lah, you deserve to play at european level.
like CL, or uefa cup.
I think is about time he join a better club.....
I don't think he will go, he is too loyal to the club. But yeah i think he deserves better. Newcastle should let him go in peace considering the years of dedicated service he has given the club. Let him win some medals so that he can retire having at least achieved something
