Liverpool have taken the unusual step of offering Jermaine Pennant a new 12-month contract - even though they don't want to keep him. The winger is out of contract at the end of the season and boss Rafa Benitez is open to offers of £4million in the January transfer window.
But Pennant has so far refused to even speak to clubs prepared to offer that money, and is instead interested in joining AC Milan on a free in the summer.
Milan are prepared to offer the former Arsenal and Birmingham star a pre-contract agreement to ensure he moves to Italy, and that has raised the possibility that he could go out on loan for the rest of this season.
Benitez knows that if the winger is loaned out and is a success then he would miss out on a fee. The offer of a new deal would prevent that from happening, but Benitez is aware that Pennant is unlikely to agree.
