The Kaka deal... The Sheikh could have indirectly paid themselves with the purchase of Kaka.
Kaka’s £243million move to Eastlands fell apart last night — just when everything seemed in place to benefit all the parties concerned.
We can reveal that Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the father of City owner Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, was a long-standing business associate of Italian Prime Minister and AC Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi.
Following his death at 86 in 2004, his son Khalifa, Sheikh Mansour’s brother, took charge of the family investment in the Berlusconi empire.
It meant that even if City had coughed up £108m for Kaka, the Mansour family would have benefited as they hold a large stake in media mogul Berlusconi’s business.
The link begins to explain why the huge sum of money would not have crippled the Arabs. Mansour’s father founded the Abu Dhabi Royal Investment Fund. That holds a 2.042 per cent stake in Mediaset, Berlusconi’s TV, radio and print giant, and is now controlled by Khalifa.
The Sheikhs also have a 16 per cent stake in Barclays Bank, after ploughing in £3.5bn in cash to stabilise the wobbling financial giant. Barclays in turn hold a 5.012 per cent stake in Mediaset, making them the second-largest shareholder after Berlusconi.
By unravelling this tangled web, we expose how everyone could have ended up a winner in the Kaka money-go-round. Though the Mansour empire may have had to hand over £108m to Milan, they knew it would boost the profits and accounts of AC’s holding company Fininvest — which also controls Mediaset, where the Arabs have a stake!
A Milan insider said: “Sheikh Mansour knew it was not £108m down the drain if he bought Kaka. It was £108m to buy the world’s best player but at the same time it would boost his own business interests.”
