Arsenal offer for Andrei Arshavin accepted

Arsenal's frustrating pursuit of Russia forward Andrei Arshavin moved closer to satisfaction on Monday night after his club, Zenit St Petersburg, indicated that a fee had been agreed with the north London side.

London calling? Will Andrei Arshavin finally seal a move to Arsenal

However, Zenit suggested that the 27-year-old playmaker's wage demands could yet prevent the transfer being completed.

After weeks of negotiation and wrangling, a statement on Zenit's website claimed: "The fundamental understanding over the transfer of the player has been achieved between the two clubs.

"At the moment, the basic obstacle in realising the transaction is Andrei Arshavin's personal requirements."

Arshavin is said to earn £100,000 a week at Zenit and it has been reported that Arsenal would require him to take a £20,000 a week pay cut.

Arsenal are understood to have offered an initial payment of £12 million, with £3 million of add ons, for Arshavin, but Zenit had wanted £17 million for their star player, who won widespread praise for his performances for Russia at last summer's European Championship.

Having grown frustrated by the deal, the Premier League club set a deadline of midnight on Monday for a decision to be made, threatening to withdraw their offer. Zenit said last night that the figure agreed between the two clubs reflects "the real market value of the player".

Would £80,000 a week make him top earner at Arsenal?

well the statement " Arshavin to move to Arsenal" has been around for the past 8 months, i wonder why they take so long just to sign a decent player, he is not even world-class like deco or huntelaar why take so long just to sign him.

Thats exactly what i am also wandering.Arsenal can't even buy a simple player like him also.their main problem is this players salary which seems quite common in Arsenal and is also the main reason why players like Flamini left Arsenal.

Arshavin drops wage demands in order to finally complete Arsenal move

    Andrei Arshavin

Andrei Arshavin is understood to be willing to take a pay cut to join Arsenal after the Gunners finally agreed a deal with Zenit St Petersburg.

The Russian club are thought to have accepted an offer in the region of £15million after intense negotiations over the last few days.

Reports have suggested Arshavin will ask Arsenal to break their pay structure and match his current wages, believed to top £100,000-a-week, but the 27-year-old is so desperate to move to Emirates Stadium that he will not risk jeopardising the transfer.

The forward had threatened to buy himself out of his contract at the end of the Russian league season in November as talks between the two clubs stalled and wants to seal a switch to north London this month to avoid beginning another campaign in his homeland.

William Gallas is among the highest earners at Arsenal on £80,000-a-week and Arshavin will expect to match that amount while receiving a substantial signing-on fee.

'The fundamental understanding over the transfer of the player is achieved between the clubs,' read a statement on Zenit’s official website.

'At the moment the basic obstacle in realisation of the transaction is Andrei Arshavin’s personal requirements.' There are several other issues to be resolved such as Zenit asking Arshavin to repay half the £4.5m bonus he received when signing a long-term contract in 2006.

The Gunners now look set to cool their interest in another transfer target, Micah Richards, after the Manchester City defender insisted he is staying at Eastlands.

'It’s always flattering being linked with a club like Arsenal, and they have one of the best managers in the world in Arsene Wenger,' said the 20-year-old, who supported Arsenal as a youngster. 'However, as I said before, I’m happy at Manchester City and believe that the club is going in the right direction.

'We’ve had a difficult season all round, which can affect performances, but I think that I can continue my development at City and hopefully win some trophies.

    Arshavin price 'now £15m'

Sky Sports News understands that Zenit St Petersburg will accept a £15 million one-off payment from Arsenal for star playmaker Andrei Arshavin.

Chief news reporter Bryan Swanson said the Russian club's general manager Maxim Mitrofanov has confirmed they will accept a £15million bid for the player.

It is understood that the current bid on the table from Arsenal is £12million plus £3million in add-ons but Zenit's board met on Tuesday night and they want the £15million as a one-off payment.

Previously, Zenit had been looking for £20million for Arshavin, but are ready to accept a smaller amount providing the money is paid up front.
