Wigan manager Steve Bruce has expressed his delight at Antonio Valencia turning down a move to Real Madrid.
The Latics have already seen key men Emile Heskey and Wilson Palacios leave the JJB Stadium in January and Bruce is glad the Ecuadorian winger will not do the same.
"Valencia has turned down an offer from Real Madrid," Bruce said after his side's goalless draw at Aston Villa. "It only happened [on Friday] and it is great news for us
"He is prepared to stay with us until the end of the season at least - which is fantastic.
"We have lost Emile and Wilson, and the last thing you want to do is rebuild a team in January. Keeping hold of Antonio was paramount."
Charles N'Zogbia watched The Latics at Villa Park and Bruce confirmed he should join them, with Ryan Taylor going in the opposite direction, if both parties can agree personal terms.
"As regards N'Zogbia, we have agreed a fee with Newcastle; we spoke to him last night - and he was at the game today," Bruce added.
"There is still a bit to do to get over the line, and we will see what develops."
Looks like a lot of players are turning down Real Madrid these days... lol
Fabregas, Kaka, Ronaldo, Pennant... lol and now even Valencia...
I think they know going to RM will be a fight for the first 11.
