Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs deserves to be knighted in recognition for his outstanding service to football, according to his manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
Fergie’s words follow the Welsh winger’s goal - his first of the
season - against West Ham United on Sunday, which helped the English,
European and World champions secure a 13th consecutive game unbeaten,
without conceding a goal, sending them back to the Premier League
summit.
Giggs' second-half strike, his 150th goal for the club in all
competitions, means he becomes the only player to have scored in every
season of the 17-year running Premier League, and he is showing no
signs of hanging up his boots just yet.
The ex-Welsh international was awarded an OBE in 2007, but Ferguson is adamant Giggs is worthy of a more prestigious prize.
“When you consider how the English rugby team, when they won three or
four matches to win the World Cup, were given knighthoods and MBEs,
Giggs has performed like a star for 20 years,” said Ferguson, gunning
for his and Giggs’ 11th Premier League title.
“He’s won 10 league medals – I hope it’s 11 this year – and two European Cups. Longevity must surely surpass short-term success.
“He is an absolute credit. Anyone who wants to dedicate their life to football should take the example of Ryan Giggs and they won’t go far wrong.”
Giggs, who surpassed Sir Bobby Charlton’s appearance record for the
club at the end of last season, continues to ignore calls to retire,
insisting he remains keen to enjoy the remainder of his playing days.
“Some people said last season that the Champions League final would be
the perfect way to end,” he said. “But I didn’t see it that way. I want
to play on as long as I can.
“When you are younger you think this career is going to last for ever
and things can pass you by. Now I know the end is going to be sooner
rather than later, so I am taking everything in and making sure I enjoy
it.”
While he may not possess the lightning pace that bamboozled defenders
on the left wing for years on end, Giggs is enjoying a new role in the
centre of United’s midfield as he approaches 800 appearances in the
famous red shirt.
“I am enjoying that role. There are plenty of young legs around me to
do the running and I can play the passes,” he said. “As long as the
manager is picking me in the team I know I am good enough to keep
going.”
