Portsmouth's plans to appoint Avram Grant as Tony Adams' replacement have hit the buffers.
The News says Grant is favoured by owner Sacha Gaydamak as the man to guide the Blues to Premier League safety.
But Grant, who was dismissed as Chelsea's manager despite steering them to the Champions League final last season, could be set for a sensational return to the Stamford Bridge hot seat. He is being touted, along with Guus Hiddink, to be named Luiz Felipe Scolari's successor in the wake of the Brazilian's exit.
The news comes as it emerged caretaker manager Paul Hart is expected to be in charge for 'one or two games', as the search for the club's new boss continues.
Grant has been at the forefront of Gaydamak's mind as his choice to become the club's new manager.
But sources close to the 53-year-old yesterday stated he was not particularly keen to step into Adams' shoes.
