After becoming Real Madrid’s all-time record goalscorer with a brace against Sporting Gijon on Sunday evening, Raul pledged to continue his exploits for the Spanish giants for as long as possible.
Raul, 31, scored his 308th and 309th goals for Los Merengues to overtake the great Alfredo Di Stefano who was a key figure in the Real sides that won five consecutive European Cups between 1956 and 1960.
Since making his debut as a 17-year-old in October 1994, under coach Jorge Valdano, Raul has been a real icon to the Bernabeu support and is also Spain’s record goalscorer and the most prolific player in the history of Uefa competitions and the Champions League.
But it is his success in surpassing Di Stefano that has given the cultured forward the most cause for celebration as he becomes a living legend at one of the most prestigious clubs in world football.
“I’m happy,” said Raul. “At last I was able to overtake Don Alfredo.
“Now I’m going to continue scoring the most goals to help Real Madrid. I leave happy with the victory.”
