Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will miss Sunday’s Premier League game against Manchester City after failing to recover from a hamstring injury.
Gerrard sustained a torn hamstring in the FA Cup fourth round replay defeat to local rivals Everton and was immediately ruled out for a minimum of three weeks.
Rafa Benitez revealed earlier in the week that his captain could be in line for an early return in the game against City at Anfield but those hopes have now been dashed.
Liverpool will hope that Gerrard now recovers in time for the Champions League last 16, first leg tie against Real Madrid on Wednesday but his participation in that game also appears in doubt.
"Steven will not be ready for this [City] game,” Benitez told the club’s official website.
“We don't know if he'll be back for the game in midweek but clearly he will not be involved against City.
"He is improving but we cannot take any risks so he won't be in the squad."
Told you Rafa should'nt have opened his mouth, now Gerrard injuired comfirm either lose or draw
He's not superman lah... Even Rooney took 6 weeks to return... He shud be lucky he can make it to Old Trafford come 14 Mar...
