Liverpool’s success in reigniting their title challenge in March has been recognised with Rafa Benitez and Steven Gerrard being named the Barclays Premier League manager and player of the month.
With leaders Manchester United slipping up with two consecutive defeats, the first of which came at the hands of Benitez’s side, Liverpool took full advantage by collecting maximum points in the calendar month.
The stunning 4-1 victory at Old Trafford was sandwiched by a 2-0 win over Sunderland and 5-0 hammering of Aston Villa to leave The Reds just a point behind their great rivals, who have played a game less.
Benitez has now been named manager of the month for the fifth time in his career, joining a select group of bosses that includes Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger and Sir Bobby Robson amongst others.
Gerrard also takes the individual award for the fifth time after scoring at Old Trafford and claiming his maiden Premier League hat-trick in the win over Villa.
