Killed ... Richard Wilkinson, 17
Richard Wilkinson, 17, was a passenger in a Peugeot 306 when it careered off the A968 near Eckford in the Borders.
Richard, whose grandfather was former Scotland ace Doug Jackson, died at the scene. His three pals escaped with cuts and bruises.
The teenager had earlier been playing for Hawick Wanderers under-18s and was in the car rather than on the team minibus because he and his friends were going out in Selkirk.
Tragically, the minibus was first on the scene minutes after the crash happened. Team boss Gerry McGuiness said: “Everyone is devastated. Richard was a great prospect.”
The accident happened on a weekend of carnage on Scotland’s roads. A 33-year-old man died when a Volvo hit a tree near Port Ellen, Islay, on Saturday.
And yesterday, a 28-year-old man died after being knocked down on the Perth-Dundee road.
