Martin O’Neill says that he has every intention of seeing his Aston Villa side take the game to Everton in a fashion akin to that which they did against Manchester United last weekend.
Villa carved out quite a reputation for themselves earlier in the season as a team full of pace and bravado but have since gone off the boil since the race for the top four begun to hot up.
They now sit just one point clear of Everton in sixth place after undeservedly losing to United on Sunday and O’Neill is all too aware of the importance of the visit of David Moyes’ side.
“We are where we are with seven games to go,” said the Ulsterman. “For us now, the Everton game is in front of us and we have to go into it with all guns blazing to try to get a result.
“Win the game and we’re off and running, but it won’t be easy. Everton are a point behind us and pushing for the same thing.
“David Moyes is supposed to have said, and I don’t know whether he did or not, that they might still be in the reckoning for the top four. So we should take some sort of consolation from that.
“We went to attack United and did exactly that. We never sat back. We took the game to them. It was enthralling.
“This is about us trying to win some football games. The best way to do that is for us to stay playing as positively as we have done all season.”
