Scolari and his coaching staff received £10million for six months’ work at the Bridge.
Chelsea have paid Luiz Felipe Scolari and his coaching staff £10million for six months’ work. Scolari signed a two-year contract, with an option for a further year, when he quit the Portugal national team last July, but was sacked by owner Roman Abramovich after the 0-0 draw with Hull in February.
The deal, negotiated with Scolari just before the start of Euro 2008, was worth 6m euros net per season and included performance incentives based on Chelsea’s
league position and their success in cup competitions.
Scolari and his coaching staff accepted the settlement figure on the day he was sacked and the club insisted yesterday that the negotiations were handled without recriminations from either party.
Under the terms of the Brazilian’s settlement, which the club agreed with the sacked coach at the time of his dismissal, Scolari will be paid in instalments and is also entitled to the use of the rented house in Cobham, Surrey, while his son continues to study in England.
Although Chelsea maintain that the settlement with Scolari was conducted speedily, they are only just reaching a conclusion to the negotiations involving Avram Grant.
The Israeli was sacked after they were beaten by Manchester United in the European Cup final last season and his lawyer Anthony Julius is still in talks with Chelsea over the terms of his contract, which Grant claims was for four years.
Close, but no cigar: Grant gets as near as he'll get to the Champions League trophy
Chelsea revealed in February that they had paid an incredible £23.1m to sack two managers — Jose Mourinho and Grant — along with their entire coaching staff last season.
Interim coach Guus Hiddink has revived Chelsea’s fortunes since replacing Scolari in January and has led the club to the Champions League semi-final, FA Cup semi-final and they are close to achieving their primary goal of finishing in the top four of the Barclays Premier League.
Seriously, Roman must stop all this sacking and use this money well to buy better players.
