Curtis Davies has hinted that Aston Villa colleague Martin Laursen could be forced to consider the dreadful prospect of ending his career at the age of 31.
The Danish defender has been a key figure for Aston Villa in recent seasons but the knee problems that afflicted him during his first two seasons in England have reportedly been causing him renewed problems.
Laursen has played only once in 2009 and manager Martin O’Neill has been worryingly cautious in his reluctance to talk about the availability of his club captain.
Davies, though, has articulated the fear in the Villa dressing room that they could see their defensive talisman retire as a result of his problems.
“If he has to retire, it will be a massive blow for him and the team,” said Davies in The Daily Mirror.
“He’s been trying his best to get things sorted and hopefully he can come back again next season.
“He’s the captain and is a big, solid figure for us.
“He’s a presence in both boxes – scoring goals, clearing balls.
“He’s an old school centre half and maybe if we had that side to us against West Ham we would have won.”
