The wheels are already in motion for Juventus to make a renewed attempt to sign Xabi Alonso from Liverpool.
Alonso’s Anfield future was subject to widespread conjecture for much of last summer, with Rafa Benitez seemingly willing to allow him to leave should he have been able to bring in Gareth Barry in his place.
Aston Villa dug their heels in on that front so Benitez opted to keep hold of Alonso after Juve failed to match his valuation.
The Spain midfielder has since shown his manager just what he would have been missing had his transfer gone through by proving himself to be one of the most important cogs in allowing to maximise the impact of Steven Gerrard.
However, Benitez admitted on Tuesday that he will be forced to sell before he can buy once the transfer window reopens and agent Ernesto Bronzetti, a consultant to Juventus, seems intent on testing the water.
“I will try and bring in Alonso for the Juventus central midfield,” he said in The Sun. “There was a long chase last summer for his signature, of course, so it is a road we know.”
