  Rafa Benitez believes Liverpool's lack of financial muscle has cost them the Barclays Premier League title.

  Liverpool have been Manchester United's closest rivals this season as they chase their first League title since 1990, but look set to miss out once again.

  United will be crowned champions for the third consecutive season if they claim four points from their next two games and Liverpool's long wait will go on for at least another year.

  Benitez believes Liverpool are strong enough to compete on the pitch, but not in the transfer market. 'We are getting closer and closer to winning the league every year,' he said.'Everyone knows we are now genuine contenders.

  'We’ve shown this year that we have enough quality in the squad. Look at the squad we have now compared to when I arrived here. We have better players with a winning mentality.

  'But it is still very difficult when you analyse the financial power of Chelsea, United and Arsenal with the money they can spend.'

  This is the man who spent £7m on a third-choice left-back, but he claims that Liverpool do not have the 'financial power' of United, Chelsea or laughably Arsenal. The Reds spent over £40m last summer to finish second but the Spaniard seems to be suggesting that more money may have bought the title.

   

  

   

  Rafa Benitez claims that Liverpool's chances of winning the Premier League title are hampered by a lack of 'financial power' despite spending over £40m last summer.

   

  The Reds boss spent £20m on Robbie Keane and £7m on third-choice left-back Andrea Dossena but still maintains that Manchester United, Chelsea and even Arsenal have more financial muscle.

   

  Liverpool have lost only twice in the Premier League this season but need United to slip up in their final three games to claim the title.
