Gill: Benitez claims are nonsense
Manchester United chief executive David Gill has rubbished Rafa Benitez's claims that they have bought their way to the league title.
The Red Devils equalled Liverpool's record of 18 championships with a point in Saturday's clash with Arsenal.
Benitez's reaction has been to suggest United have an unfair advantage over the opposition because of their muscle in the transfer market.
"For them, spending £20 million or even £30 million on players to come off the bench and influence matches," asserted the Liverpool boss. "It is easier than for the rest of us.
"But we are working hard to catch up with them and hopefully to overhaul them."
Gill insists that is not the case and feels the commercial success of the Champions League finalists is behind their ability buy the best talent.
"It's a nonsense," said Gill.
"The analysis that was done shows that we are broadly in line with them over the last few years in terms of net spend on players.
"There are a lot of factors in it.
"We have great players and a great manager, but we have a great off-the-field team as well.
"We have a fantastic stadium that holds 76,000, which gives us a competitive advantage.
"Our commercial team are doing fantastic deals that we put back into the club, so we have many advantages through our current structure, which I think keeps us apart."
