DENIED ... Manchester City have slammed reports they bid £138m for Barcelona star Lionel Messi
A Spanish newspaper said that Barcelona ace Messi rejected City’s offer, which included a £9m-a-year deal for the Argentine striker.
But City bigwigs have poured cold water on the report – just one day after chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak insisted the club would not pay silly money in the summer transfer window.
An Eastlands spokesman said: “Manchester City note with interest the reports circulating in the Spanish media that the club has made an offer to the Barcelona player Lionel Messi and that he has turned down the chance to join the club.
“While acknowledging that Messi is a world-class player of the highest calibre, Manchester City would like to make it clear that the club has at no time made an approach to him or his representatives.”
Earlier this month, City boss Mark Hughes hit out at the number of reports linking the club with players around the world since the Abu Dhabi United Group completed their takeover of the club last summer.
