  STOCKHOLM - England survived a thrilling Sweden fightback to reach the final of the European U21 Championships, beating the hosts 5-4 on penalties after a 3-3 draw on Friday.

  Germany also advanced to Monday's final in Malmo after right back Andreas Beck's long-range strike earned a 1-0 win over Italy.

  Beck blasted a shot past Italian keeper Andrea Consigli from 30 metres three minutes into the second half.

  England led Sweden 3-0 at halftime thanks to defenders Martin Cranie and Nedum Onuoha and a Mattias Bjarsmyr own goal, before a Marcus Berg double either side of Ola Toivonen's free kick forced extra time.

  Sweden hit the bar in extra time after England striker Fraizer Campbell was sent off but went out on penalties when Guillermo Molins hit the post in the shootout.

  Germany's Ashkan Dejagah is out of the final after being booked on Friday while England will be without suspended goalkeeper Joe Hart and strikers Campbell and Gabriel Agbonlahor.

  Pearce sweats on appeal for Man City keeper Hart

  England U21 boss Stuart Pearce hopes to have Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart available for the European Championship final.

  Pearce is urging UEFA to uphold England’s appeal against the penalty shootout yellow card which would keep goalkeeper Hart out of the final.

  Pearce said: "We have formulated a letter and that will soon be on its way to UEFA. We are in their hands, but we hope they see our side.

  "We’ve watched it again and the referee has told him after the first penalty not to talk to the taker and he didn’t after that.

  "When the player placed the ball on the spot, he was in a crouched position probably about three yards off his line waving his arms.

  "That’s not a booking offence when you’ve got a kid who has spent two years trying to qualify to play in a major final."

  Watford goalkeeper Scott Loach or Peterborough’s Joe Lewis will take Hart’s place.

  FA excited about England U21 final run

  England FA boss Ian Watmore is delighted to see the nation's U21 players in tonight's European Championship final.

  Chief executive Watmore said: "It would mean a lot to win this tournament both to the staff and the fans.

  "If you look back, all the great teams have had good youth teams along the way. It is a good example that talent is coming through.

  "A number of these players have won senior caps already so it would give them a lot of hope for next year if we qualify for the World Cup and beyond that in the European Championships.

  "These are the players who will be dominating English football in the next five or six years."

  All of England's senior players will be cheering on the U21's in tonight's European Championship final against Germany.

  England U21 coach Stuart Pearce revealed: "When I came out of the stadium the other night after the Sweden game I looked at my telephone and there were a lot of messages of support. It is nice that people take an interest. I had a text message before the tournament from John Terry.

  "It was nice that the England captain wanted me to pass on his regards to my squad, which I did. David Beckham has been on as well, and obviously Fabio (Capello).

  "People have a real buy-in to this group of players wanting to be successful, and that is nice to know."
