    Zhirkov flies in for medical

Yuri Zhirkov has flown to London to undergo a medical with Chelsea according to reports in his native Russia.

The CSKA Moscow winger has been rumoured to be close to joining the Blues all summer but it now appears likely that he will be unveiled as manager Carlo Ancelotti's latest signing next week.

The 25-year-old, who has been linked with a move to Manchester United in the past, is thought to be the subject of an £18million fee and will negotiate personnel terms once his medical is complete.

The Russian daily newspaper Sport Express revealed that Zhirkov had left his homeland to board a plane destined for London earlier on Sunday.

As of yet there has been no confirmation from either club but Sport Express claim that CSKA president Eugene Giner confirmed that the Russian international was close to joining the Blues.

Zhirkov shot to prominence at Euro 2008 where his standout performances alongside team-mate Andrey Arshavin helped guide Russia to the last four.

    Chelsea snap up defender Zhirkov

Chelsea have signed Russian international Yuri Zhirkov from CSKA Moscow for a reported £18m fee.

The 25-year-old left-back, who has played 28 times for Russia, came to prominence during Euro 2008 when the national side reached the semi-finals.

Zhirkov, who can also play in midfield, has joined on a four-year deal.

The Russian utility player is Chelsea's third signing of the summer, following the arrivals of goalkeeper Ross Turnbull and striker Daniel Sturridge.

During his time with CSKA Moscow, Zhirkov helped the Russian club win the Uefa Cup, scoring the second goal in the 3-1 win over Sporting Lisbon.

Zhirkov flew to London on Sunday and underwent a medical before completing his transfer.

Arsenal star Arshavin: I'll help Zhirkov settle at Chelsea

Arsenal star Andrey Arshavin says he's ready to help new Chelsea signing Yuri Zhirkov settle in London.

Arshavin said: "I'll do everything possible to help him adapt. All in all there are no weak players in Chelsea. But Zhirkov is capable of competing with any of the Blues.

"Besides, the coach can always modify the formation so that all of the best players would fit in."

Former Chelsea midfielder Alexey Smertin also remarked: "Zhirkov shouldn't be surprised when John Terry calls him 'Crazy Russian', it is his favourite phrase. At Chelsea he will have to prove himself every day. Even when I played well there, I was never sure I would start the next match."

Chelsea signing Zhirkov was Blackburn mad!

New Chelsea signing Yuri Zhirkov has revealed he's Blackburn mad!

"You probably won't believe it, but I once cheered on Blackburn," said Chelsea new boy Zhirkov, who passed a three-hour medical on Monday and today trained with his new team-mates for the first time.

The £18million signing from CSKA Moscow had not been expecting to kick a ball at Cobham, arriving in London on Sunday with just a couple of days' clothes - and not a Blackburn scarf in sight.

"I didn't come to England ready for work,' he joked. 'I have just two shirts and two pairs of jeans. When I told Chelsea, they laughed, of course. 'Don't worry,' they said, 'we'll give you kit and boots'.

"I've been welcomed very warmly and feel like I've already been here a long time. I look forward to starting work properly with Chelsea."
