Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is hopeful midfielder Samir Nasri could be available in six weeks' time.
On Tuesday, the France international suffered a broken leg during the club's pre-season training camp in Austria.
Initially, it was expected Nasri
would be sidelined for up to three months, but Wenger has offered a more optimistic timescale.
The French coach has also called on long-term injury victims Tomas Rosicky
and Eduardo to help fill the void left by Nasri.
"Unfortunately he fractured his fibula and he will be out for six weeks," Wenger told the club's official website. "It was the bad news of the day.
"He accidentally nicked the ball away from somebody having a shot on goal. Unfortunately he got kicked and broke his fibula. It's not a complicated one, it's a simple one but it will take six weeks to heal.
"But the options are Tomas Rosicky who is back. And in [those] two months Eduardo will be back as well. We do have offensive options but we don't want to lose important players before the season starts."

Arsene Wenger has revealed Eduardo da Silva will also miss the start of the season after undergoing more surgery on the leg he broke at Birmingham 17 months ago.
The Croatia striker will only be fit again in two months, said Wenger, putting further pressure on the Arsenal boss to strengthen his squad.
Samir Nasri has already been ruled out for up to three months after breaking his right leg during a training session in Austria.
Eduardo, 26, underwent routine revision surgery at the end of the season in May to try to get him back as soon as possible for the start of the new campaign.
Wenger said: 'We’ll have Eduardo back in two months. You do not want to lose important players before the season starts.
The Frenchman also spoke of Nasri's injury. The France international was carried from the pitch by Arsenal physio Colin Lewin and club doctor Gary O'Driscoll after fracturing a fibula in a challenge believed to have been made by Abou Diaby.
Head boy: Robin Van Persie extends Arsenal's lead over part-timers SC Columbia in Vienna
Arsenal confirmed Nasri will be sidelined for 'two to three months', meaning he will be absent for their first three Champions League games should they make it through next month's qualifying round.
But Wenger is hopeful of a quicker recovery. 'Unfortunately he fractured his fibula and he will be out for six weeks,' said Wenger. 'He accidentally nicked the ball away from somebody having a shot on goal. Unfortunately he got kicked and broke his fibula.
'It's not a complicated one, it's a simple one but it will take six weeks to heal.' Wenger has plenty of options down the left with Diaby, Andrey Arshavin and fit-again Tomas Rosicky all able to fill in.
But the Arsenal manager had hinted he would play Nasri in a defensive midfield role this season, meaning he may be forced to step up his search for a player to partner Cesc Fabregas.
The priority, though, remains finding a replacement up front for Emmanuel Adebayor, who was sold to Manchester City for £25million last week. Arsenal got over the disappointment of losing Nasri with a thumping 7-1 victory over part-timers SC Columbia in Vienna on Tuesay night.
Nicklas Bendtner, Robin van Persie and Aaron Ramsey all scored twice, with William Gallas adding the other goal after Arsenal had fallen behind on 35 minutes.
Goalkeeper Manuel Almunia was at fault, failing to control a back-pass, then seeing his attempted clearance ricochet in off forward Patrick Lehner.
