Former Chelsea and Millwall striker Tony Cascarino says Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was too scared to take the Real Madrid job.
Cascarino told the Daily Star Sunday: “Wenger would be in charge of some of the best players on the planet, at the biggest club in the world, with a chance to compete for all the top silverware.
“Surely anyone who turns them down is off their trolley. You could argue that Arsene is being loyal to the club – but will the fans and the board be loyal to him if the team is unsuccessful? I doubt it.
“Was Arsene too afraid to become manager of Real?
“I can see no other reason why he wouldn’t jump at the chance to join them.
“If he had left, he could have kept the affection of the Arsenal fans if he’d explained that he was ambitious to win the Champions League, to have the finances to sign the very best and not to have to sell them year on year.
“Even the most die-hard fan would understand that after all the work he’s done in north London.
“But he chose to remain in a job where he became a Dario Gradi-type figure. “
