Arsenal-Target Brede Hangeland: Premier League Survival Is Fulham's Aim

Despite the Cottagers' new-found standing as a European contender, the club's towering defender has set modest targets.

Roy Hodgson oversaw a successful one-year transition at Fulham as the club went from narrowly beating the drop in 2008, to marching to their highest ever placing in the English Football League - seventh - in 2009, however, aerially dominant defender Brede Hangeland has set a modest ambition for this coming campaign.

The centre-back, who is an apparent transfer target for fellow London club Arsenal, believes that, despite securing a place in the inaugural edition of the Europa League, the club should be equally concerned about remaining in England's top tier and avoiding relegation.

"We are in Europe, but the Premier League remains the most important thing," the Norway international informed Nettavisen. "Although we finished seventh last year, I am sure the goal for the next season will be to avoid relegation."

The defender is relishing the prospect of repulsing attacks on the continental stage, adding, "It is pretty crazy that we are in Europe.

"No-one had thought about that before last season and for Fulham as a club it is a fantastic achievement and very exciting."

Hangeland's speculated move to Arsenal may have been damaged yesterday evening due to his inclusion in the club's successful Europa League qualifier against FK Vetra. He is therefore cup-tied in Europe until February.

Hodgson's right-hand man, Ray Lewington, brushed aside the transfer talk.

"It's all speculation," Lewington said. "There have been no offers for Brede and we don't want to sell him.

"He enjoys playing for Fulham and we want him to stay."
