Carragher: Liverpool need to buy

Jamie Carragher is convinced Liverpool can win the Premiership this season - if they can add a couple more signings.

Carragher, 31, said: "It’s all about taking that final step now. We’ve brought in Glen Johnson and he will give us a major lift and hopefully there might be one or two more before we kick off so we can make up that ground on United.

"We found out last season that when you’re really going for the league title the pressure never lets up. You go into every game knowing that it’s must-win and, to be fair, we handled it pretty well apart from a certain stage of the season which I think cost us the league.

"I know that fans were looking at Rafa Benitez to make some big, big signings in terms of forward players but I don’t think we need that much. We were the second best team in England. For a few years now we have shown ourselves to be among the top six teams in Europe."

Liverpool moneymen excited by Torres commercial value

Liverpool say Fernando Torres is turning into a massive commercial success.

Anfield commercial director Ian Ayre said: "All the players are important but it's evident certain ones are crucial.

"Fernando is a global icon and a great footballer. They go hand in hand. From a commercial standpoint he's a huge attraction.

"Torres is the highest-selling shirt here. I'm not sure when he actually overtook Steven Gerrard, and there's not a huge difference, but he is our biggest seller.

"Being a global brand we have a big opportunity to push on - but we know it's not all about shirts."
