Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard admitted winning the Community Shield against Manchester United was a “sweet moment” for the Blues.
An entertaining game at Wembley ended 2-2 with Wayne Rooney scoring a last minute equalizer for the champions.
However, the Blues bounced back to win from the penalty spot and claim the first silverware of the season.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Lampard, who scored Chelsea’s second goal admitted it was a good way to start the season.
“It’s
a nice start to the season especially after that last minute goal we
could have been on a bit of a downer but we kept our heads,” said the
England international.
Lampard’s goal had an element of controversy to it after Chelsea played on despite a foul by Michael Ballack on Patrice Evra.
However, the midfielder insisted the west Londoners had done nothing wrong.
“No I think everyone knows the rules now it’s up to the referee to stop it,” he explained.
“The
rules are as a player whenever the referee stops it, he stops it so
that’s what we did. I’m sure Manchester United would have done the
same.”
Lampard also admitted he was happy with the diamond formation Chelsea had played and his own position within the team.
“I’m very happy, I don’t mind honestly where I play in midfield in a diamond,” he added.
“The holding role is not particularly my role but left right or at the top of it I’m happy.
"I
enjoyed it today, I won’t play it as a typical no 10. I try and give a
bit more to the team defensively but at the same time try to add as
much as I can going forward.”
