Former Chelsea and Marseille striker Tony Cascarino believes that in new signing Sebastien Bassong, Tottenham Hotspur may have found their heir to captain Ledley King.
The 22-year-old French-born Cameroonian made 30 league appearances for Newcastle United and was expected to leave the club during the close-season following the Toon's relegation.
Arsenal, Manchester City and Aston Villa were tipped to restore the powerful centre-back to the top-flight of English football.
However, the former Metz man has joined Harry Redknapp's men at White Hart Lane, providing welcome cover at the back following injuries sustained to central defensive trio King, Michael Dawson and Jonathan Woodgate.
And Cascarino, writing for the New Football Pools, believes that Bassong - who now will be available for Spurs against Liverpool on the opening weekend of the new season - is a shrewd signing for Londoners.
"His main attributes are a good turn of pace, physical strength and he’s not bad on the ball. He’ll only improve playing next to experienced top quality defenders like Jonathan Woodgate and Ledley King," he said.
"He has all the physical characteristics to be a big hit at White Hart Lane.
"I have known about Bassong for a while since his Metz days and he has always been highly-rated. An added bonus is that he is extremely versatile and realistically can play anywhere in the back four.
"Whether Tottenham have found the heir to Ledley King remains to be seen but I’m sure he will prove to be another shrewd signing for Redknapp alongside fellow new arrivals Kyle Naughton and Peter Crouch."
