By Channelnewsasia.com | Posted: 01 October 2009 0806 hrs
SINGAPORE: Singapore Telecommunications Ltd (SingTel) announced it
has won the rights to air Barclays Premier League (BPL) matches across
its platforms, as well as exclusive broadcast rights to ESPN STAR
Sports for mio TV.
In a statement released Thursday, SingTel said the rights would
allow it to broadcast BPL matches on mio TV, the Internet and mobile
applications for three years starting August next year.
SingTel said it has also secured rights to a suite of sports
networks and services from ESPN STAR Sports (ESS) for its mio TV
customers. ESPNEWS, a brand new 24-hours sports news channel, is slated
to be broadcast on mio TV from next month.
Singtel Singapore CEO Allen Liew assured that charges will be
comparable to what sports fans are currently paying to their cable TV
operator.

So now I have to subscribe to mio?!?! ![]()
serious....so now i have to switch to singtel mio tv liao?????wtf
from next season onwards for three seasons...
yes you have to..
Sad to let SingTel take over BPL rights, after securing UCL and Europa Cup boardcast rights. As after all, Starhub always won the bid.
But hope, they would do better than Starhub.
i confirm the news liao...sian..what do we have to suffer from all this rubbish.

4 mths free + 8 mths need to pasy money = 1 yr subscription.
Better offer than Starhub indeed.
actually, the football is for my dad...
i watch it only on rare occasions...
however, Mio TV is shit when it come to other channels.. the only channels i regularly watch are the documentary channels which Mio doesn't even have...
going to call and cancel starhub after this season end.realli F@#k up.Pity those who just sign up 2 yrs contract with starhub...hang on to it first, coz the cancellation also need to pay penalty.
and starhub charge more for football channel.
we give them money to lose bids?

There is virtually no incentive for me to switch to mio....
I like stuff like Discovery Channel, Nat Geo Channel, and History Channel, all of which mio sorely lacks..... seriously, who gives a damn about watching shows 24 hours after the US telecast or telecasts of same-day DVD releases....
Subscribing to mio just for BPL and Champions League is something like buying a whole cake just to eat the cherry at the top.
And I don't even watch that many football matches; just the ones that really matter.
sianz man.
what about the other sports like tennis and motor racing?
now i have to subscribe to both mio and starhub?
of no consequence to a growing number with all the rise of internet streaming....so cheer up, haven't had the footie packages for more than 4 years and still living well..lol
Look like it is better to watch live on internet!
More importantly, who will screen the World Cup next year?
is that how competition works? singtel went into cable tv business just to snatch business from starhub?
change to miotv from starhub wah lau eh, sibeh mafan one. miotv got ESPN or not one? if starhub won the bid after 3 years, need to switch back to starhub wtf wtf wtf. the thought of switching back and forth really made me damn sian man lol.
how come ESPN never bid for BPL rights?
Mio TV is undoubtedly screwed up. Causes yr internet connection to hang once a fortnight, or intermittent loss of signal. Worst ever connection

Starhub
if after 3 years later starhub won the bid and we have to switch back to starhub? wtf wtf wtf lool
Its a sad day for us subscribers... Somehow I feel that all this was done to allow Singtel mio to squeezed more from us...
Starhub has many other good channels that many have come to like already and wouldn't change to mio even if they were "given" the champions league rights...
And now that they have been "given" the Premier League as well, fans has no other choice... Starhub is already established so there will be many whose family members have got used to the other channels and won't give up... So now have to subscript to both in the end...
I just feel all these are a bunch of bull... Someone is taking us for a ride here... Starhub and Singtel work hand in hand to squeeze us... What bidding war? Starhub didn't even bother to bid for the Uefa Champions League... They just gave it to Singtel for free... more like wayang war to me... The last so called winning bid from Starhub wasn't even made know to the public after all these years to justify the increased... What is... "said to be" or "rumoured to be"... bla.. bla.. bla... $250 million sum just pluck out from the sky? They are listed companies... so they should make it known to the public and minor shareholders how much they spent / paid for it.
I bet Singtel won't come clean as well and won't announce officially how much they paid for it as well... More "said to be" or "rumoured to be"... bla.. bla.. bla... sum is more likely I guess...
how come no news of ESPN bidding for it? i like John Dykes hosting of matches man. miotv got show ESPN and John Dykes in it or not?
now I am going to miss Joe Morrison as well...wtf wtf wtf
wah song bo... LOL. see how much its mio's package first before buying....
i think it will not come cheap too. it said to be comparable to what Starhub is offering. honestly dun understand how come we are into these shit...paying more and more and in near future M1 might set up their own tele company and make the competition more fierce.
