Rafa Benitez's side are already six points behind Chelsea following their third defeat of the season at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
Now Italians Juve are planning a fresh bid for Argentine midfielder Mascherano, 24, who they tried to sign from West Ham before he moved to Anfield in January 2007.
The Turin giants are ready to offer £23million as they seek to grab the Serie A title away from Inter Milan. And club officials plan to open talks with their Anfield opposite numbers in the coming weeks.
Mascherano is already a target for Barcelona, with Liverpool rejecting an ]approach for him from the European champions during the summer.
Mascherano, who possesses an Italian passport, is tempted to move away from Merseyside even though he is under contract until 2012.
He is believed to be unhappy at the break-up of his partnership with Xabi Alonso, who joined Real Madrid in the summer.
And he was dismayed at criticism for his performance in the 2-0 defeat at Chelsea.
The Kop have got their own back on Chelsea by stealing Benfica wonderkid Toni Brito Sa from under their noses.
Benfica have accepted Liverpool's offer of £290,000 for one of the most highly-rated youngsters in Portugal.
Guinea-born Brito, 16, had a trial at Chelsea when Phil Scolari was boss and was ready to sign a six-year deal.
bye bye
its ok, we have lucas ![]()
i don't understand....
i really don't..
why in the freaking blue hell is mascherano worth so much????
is he really REALLY that good???
Wow Liverpool are screwed if they manage to lose one of their better players to Juventus.
He has been a rock in Liverpool's midfield, often covering for Lucas for his shortcomings.
23M?
That too exp?
In fact i think that Juventus will get a bargain if they get him for 23 million.
He is good, still young, captain of his country, and still many good years ahead of him.
If Pool sell him plus the $12m they have, they can buy David Villa and move Gerrard back into midfield with that new Italian guy, not bad i think... and Lucas can sit on the bench lah...
I still think Pool need another top striker as Torres seems to get injure quite frequently kind...

We need to know Aquilani is a Attacking Midfield!!!
Anyway 23m...not sure if mascherano is really that good, but he seems pretty aggressive in midfield battles to get ball.
they should bring in a defender..
carragher really cmi.. time for him to be on bench
liverpool will be doomed without masch. next time they play a match just watch this guy. his movement and anticipation for his opponent's move is terrific. he's hardworking too, chasing opponents everywhere
ITS OK!
WE HAVE LUCAS!

haha, the time lucas become a gd player, i tink it will be the time burnley will lift the champions league trophy...
Mas's task last season just to break down attack.
Now, need to deliver accurate pass forward and shift into attack gear.
If he make some noise with the press, Ah Ben will kick him out.
As for extra cash, give Ah Ben also no use.
End up buying some injured players for 5 years vision.
By then, all the players either old or gone liao.
Actually Lucas is like United's Fletcher a few yrs ago... I remember 2, 3 yrs ago when Fletcher's name was in the line-up, it was like... omg how come Fergie is still giving this guy so much game time... Are the rumours making the rounds really true... Is he his step son... lol
But Fletcher has come good and today, he is one of the best United player in the squad... Maybe Lucas need time as well...

The Argentina midfielder is reportedly still unhappy over Benitez’s refusal to sell him to Barcelona in the summer. The situation has been further exacerbated by the club's subsequent refusal to hand him a pay rise that he felt was promised to him to ease his disappointment at missing out on a dream move to the Camp Nou.
However, Mascherano's performances have not hit the heights that they did in seasons prior, and the Merseyside club are reluctant to offer the midfield enforcer an improved contract until he returns to the level of consistency that originally endeared him to the Kop.
There was never any prospect of Benitez selling the 25-year-old once Xabi Alonso was allowed to join Real Madrid in a £32 million deal. With the Spanish star gone, and new-boy Alberto Aquilani still yet to make his debut due to injury, Benitez has been extra-reliant on Mascherano to deliver the goods.
The former River Plate, Corinthians and West Ham United player is currently earning around £60,000-a-week.
