LIVERPOOL face an agonising 48-hour wait to discover the extent of the hamstring injury suffered by World Cup winner Fernando Torres.
The Reds’ striker pulled up sharply moments after he had played a part in the build up to Andres Iniesta’s winning goal against Holland in Johannesburg’s Soccer City last night.
It was initially feared that Torres would face a lengthy lay-off, as the television images showed him in tears and beating the ground in frustration.
However, he was able to take part in Spain’s celebrations – he even posed with a Liverpool scarf draped over his shoulders – and it is understood he walked out of Soccer City briskly, without any need for assistance.
With Spain flying back to Madrid for a glorious homecoming, Liverpool were not expecting to hear from either Spain’s medical staff or Torres today.
Torres is now officially on a three-week break from the club, along with the other players who were involved in the dramatic conclusion to the 19th World Cup final.

ytd i thot he faking to waste time
Torres is realistic about Liverpool winning any silverware under Ah Roy next season.
So, he will most probably put himself up for transfer.
But, his injury issue will be his obstacle from sale.
Ah Roy will be happy to use the 50 million for the buying of other players.
rather he not come
After winning the world cup, there will more unrest in the Anfield dressing room as the spanish and dutch players will squaring off each other.
I guess the dutch players will move to Arsenal.
then spain players will move to Chelsea?
frankly, torres performance was horrible during the WC.
i think many clubs thinking twice about signing him on now.

I don't believe this will happen...they are professionals after-all.
Plus which club would then wanna sign such a player up.
even if want to sell torres, he also wont be fit to pass the medical by end of august. the only available transfer window is January 2011 for torres to leave liverpool. otherwise he need to stay on until end of season.

I think its still up to the club's own discretion if they wanna sign an injured player, just like Aquilani's case?
oh no..so is he gonna miss the first match ? against arsenal..
hmm hmm.
best thing...he is unfit n still beg to play first team...again..i must say... glad vincete nv start him..eww
Liverpool are hopeful that World Cup-winning Spain striker Fernando Torres' groin injury is not as bad as first feared.
Torres came off the bench in extra-time as Spain beat Holland 1-0 in Sunday's Soccer City showdown but pulled up sharply as he chased a ball forward
Torres suffered with injuries during the 2009/10 season but Dr Peter Brukner, Liverpool's new Head of Medicine and Sports Science, is optimistic there is not too much for the 26-year-old to worry about.
"We've been in touch with the Spanish medical team and they don't think it's too serious. It's an adductor muscle injury but they've not had a chance to assess it today," he told Liverpool's official website.
"Fernando will have a proper assessment and probably a scan tomorrow and some of the Liverpool medical staff will go to Madrid later in the week to fully assess the injury and organise his rehab. At this stage we don't think it's too serious.
"We can't say too much more at the moment until it is properly assessed."
The Anfield club have strengthened their sports science and sports medicine department with five new additions.
Two physiotherapists from the Australia national team, Darren Burgess and Phil Coles, have joined Brukner - who was also at the World Cup with the Socceroos.
Tottenham's club doctor Zaf Iqubal has also been recruited along with Jordan Milsom, who joins the backroom team as sports scientist, while the club will also be working with John Moores University through sports science consultant Barry Drust, who will spend a couple of days at the first team training ground each week.
Liverpool's former club doctor Mark Waller left the club at the end of June after 17 years at Anfield.

Showing his colours? Torres wears a Liverpool scarf to pose with the World Cup in the Spain dressing room following Sunday's victory over Holland
Madrid memories: Torres wears an Atleti scarf yesterday (left), three years after wearing the club's red and white strip
It was the picture that gave Liverpool fans hope: Fernando Torres proudly wearing a club scarf in the aftermath of Spain's World Cup glory.
The Reds' official website even dubbed it the 'best pic you'll see all year' - it has been a pretty bad 12 months at Anfield - and a clear indication of his love for the club.
But by the time the striker had swapped Johannesburg for a return home, there was also a quick change of attire too.
Gone was the Liverpool neckwear for an open-bus parade around the Spanish capital - in its place an Atletico Madrid scarf.
The 26-year-old also draped himself in a flag of his first club and appeared to tie an Atleti 'Torres No 9' shirt to the vehicle's top-deck railings.
Back home: Torres (nearside of bus, third left) bends down by an Atletico Madrid shirt bearing his name and number as he wears a Spain flag adorned with the club's crest
The prolific goalscorer has never hidden his love for the Spanish club and counts his connection with their fans as a reason why he would have reservations about playing for Real Madrid.
So does the scarf show Torres wants to head back to Atleti? Of course not - but perhaps it shows Liverpool fans were a bit too quick to paint his earlier scarf-wearing as a sign that the player was staying at Anfield.
Roy Hodgson admits he needs to convince his star players that Merseyside is the place to be despite a lack of Champions League football this season and the new boss urgently wants face-to-face talks with Torres.
Chelsea have made a £40million bid and Barcelona are also interested. Torres has often voiced his love and commitment to English football's most decorated team, but often with the caveat that they need to bring in world class reinforcements this summer.
With a small budget making that unlikely, Torres was ambiguous about his future when questioned in South Africa. He wanted to wait until after the World Cup, now Liverpool are the ones who are waiting.
chelsea should drop the idea of signing him.
his injury and performance at the world cup tells it all.
Hodgson took charge at Liverpool a fortnight ago but was unable to meet Torres at first due to the player's involvement in the World Cup in South Africa.
Speaking at his team's pre-season training camp, Hodgson said: "I have met with Fernando.
"I found him to be a very pleasant man and we had a nice conversation.
"As far as we are concerned he is a Liverpool player and we want him to remain a Liverpool player.
"He is not for sale and we don't welcome any offers for him. We want to keep him.
"My conversation with him was only short because I had to leave to come to the training camp in Switzerland.
"We spoke about football, the World Cup, his injury, and I told him how much I am looking forward to working with him.
"Christian Purslow [managing director] was also at the meeting and chatted to Fernando for a lot longer after I left but my chat with him was only about football matters."

Ancelotti: We don't need Torres
Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti has played down speculation linking England left-back Ashley Cole with a summer move away from Stamford Bridge and insists the club have no plans to bid for Liverpool frontman Fernando Torres.
On reports linking World Cup-winning Spain forward Torres with a move to the Barclays Premier League champions, the Ancelotti told Chelsea's official website: "I don't think we need other strikers - nothing has changed because in the next days come back (Didier) Drogba, (Nicolas) Anelka and (Salomon) Kalou and we have (Daniel) Sturridge."

Knn buy Augero leh!
This Lotti something wrong one leh... This is the second time I read him saying this already... The last time he said it, Chelsea start making offers a few days later...
Now with Roy trying to keep things under control at Pool and coming out to say not selling, he says it again... Don't need... Not inportant, this time better still, he insist they have no plans to bid at all... But I won't be too surprise if Chelsea come back with more money in a few days time... I wonder why he even say all this then come making offers after offers from $30m then $40m... Next $50m coming liao... lol...
Liverpool will sell torres if the price is right.
Ah Roy will need more funds from selling players to buy new players that he want.
It is a matter of time that they will agreed with a common acceptable price.
After winning the world cup, Torres will be hungry for more medals and Liverpool will not be able to give him the champion league medal for the next season.
So, he will decide to leave if Chelsea is knocking his door.
chelsea better drop the idea of sign torres.
he is injury prone and way too expensive.
Sign Torres for Champion League.
He is a worthy investment.
That is the prize that Roman is hunting for.
After that, chelsea will have to change owner liao.
