GERRARD: JOE COLE BETTER THAN MESSI

Gerrard - big fan of Cole.

Steven Gerrard claims Joe Cole is as good as - if not better than - Lionel Messi.

The Liverpool skipper was seen as a key figure in persuading Cole to move to Anfield on a free transfer from Chelsea this summer.

And Gerrard seems to have quite a high opinion of his new teammate.

Speaking to Match of the Day magazine, Gerrard said: "Messi can do some amazing things, but anything he can do Joe can do as well, if not better.

"He used to shock us in training by doing footy tricks with a golf ball that most players can't even do with a football.

"I really fancy Joe for the [player of the year] award this season."

There were rumours about Gerrard's own future at the club this summer, but after meeting new manager Roy Hodgson, he committed himself to Liverpool.

"It's a great club and after speaking with Roy Hodgson I'm really pleased to see his plans for the club," said Gerrard.

"It's a new era now - we must forget about the horror of what happened last season and get this club back to where it belongs, which is the Champions League at the very least."

It's too easy to play against England! Ray Parlour slams Fabio Capello's tactics ahead of Hungary clash

Ray Parlour has delivered a warning to England - insisting that Fabio Capello's team are just too predictable.

The Three Lions face Hungary at Wembley on Wednesday night and are determined to restore some pride after a disappointing showing at the World Cup.

Parlour believes that although players were not at their best in South Africa, it was England's tactical naivety that led to their ultimate downfall.

'Teams just know how England are going to play,' said the former Arsenal midfielder. 'The four-four-two that they use just makes it too easy for teams to isolate key players such as Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney.

'England need to find a system that at least makes it hard for teams to cancel out those sorts of players'.

England struggled to get through a relatively easy group in South Africa before suffering their heaviest tournament defeat - a 4-1 hammering by Germany in the last 16.

But Parlour, who won 10 England caps, denied that the players did not show their full commitment, citing his personal pride in playing for his country.

'I won a few trophies in my time but playing for your country is still right up there in your career highlights,' he said.

'We know England did not play to their best, but the players would have gave their all, it's clear they just wasn't comfortable in the system they were playing.'
