Arsenal are reportedly on the brink of capturing central defender Sebastien Squillaci from Sevilla for a fee of €8 million.
The
30-year-old French stopper was absent from the Andalusian's lineup for
their UEFA Champions League qualifying tie away to Braga on Wednesday
night and Canal + France has suggested that an imminent deal
with the Gunners lead to his omission from the contest in Portugal, a
game Sevilla lost 1-0.
France international defender Squillaci
joined los Nervionenses in 2008 after spending the majority of his
career in Ligue 1. His contract at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan is set to
expire next summer and the Spanish outfit appear content to cash in now,
rather than see him negotiate a free transfer in January.
Sevilla
will apparently receive an initial payment of €8 million with an
undisclosed amount in variables to follow. Terms on a contract are
unknown at this stage but the deal is expected to be completed before
the weekend, with Squillaci possibly available to face Blackpool in the
Premier League on Saturday.
8mil for a 30 yr old? doesnt seem like a wenger style of business.
Desperate times... with Sol Campbell moved off to Newcastle, transfer windows closing soon... and with lots of key players in sick bay...

Gallas wants higher wages and longer contract and Wenger does not budge to his request.
Squillaci? They might as well go for Roma's Mexes!
i like roma's mexes, tough nut to crack along the defence line
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been told to raise his bid if he wants to sign Sevilla defender Sebastien Squillaci.
Wenger made his move for the France international in an effort to bolster his options in defence before the transfer window closes.
Squillaci was withdrawn from the Sevilla squad that faced Braga in the Champions League on Wednesday, with the Spanish club not wanting to jeopardise any deal involving the 30-year-old.
Sevilla's sporting director Ramon Rodriguez Rodriguez said: 'The player asked us not to use him in this game because of interest from an important team, but at the moment we consider the offer to be inadequate and Squillaci is still a Sevilla player.'
In demand: Sebastien Squillaci in action against South Africa at the World Cup
A statement on the Sevilla website read: 'Sebastien Squillaci's future is in the air.
'As was confirmed by sporting director Ramon Rodriguez at the airport in Porto, the club have received an offer from Arsenal. The player asked coaches not to play him in the match.'
Squillaci was part of France's squad for the recent World Cup, and played in their final group game against hosts South Africa.
New boy: Laurent Koscielny tussles with Fernando Torres during Arsenal's clash with Liverpool
Arsenal have lost William Gallas, Sol Campbell, Mikael Silvestre and Philippe Senderos from central defence.
They have brought in only Laurent Koscielny, who was sent off on his debut at Liverpool last weekend.
Bound for Marseille? Mikael Silvestre
Wenger has also signed striker Marouane Chamakh this summer but with supporters desperate for success the Arsenal boss is clearly keen to do more business before the transfer window closes at the beginning of September.
Arsenal haven't won a trophy since picking up the FA Cup in 2005, and they last won the league title back in 2004.
Meanwhile it has been reported that Marseille are lining up a move for Silvestre.
The former Manchester United player was strongly linked with a transfer to Dubai, but the move failed to materialize.
Silvestre has also been linked over the summer with a move across London to Fulham.
Marseille boss Didier Deschamps is believed to want some extra experience in defence, and Silvestre could well be tempted by a move to his home country and another chance to play Champions League football.
8m really too much....
it's in euro, so around 6.5m to 7m pounds. but uh, it's still unlike of wenger to do such a deal.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has confirmed his bid for Sevilla defender Sebastien Squillaci.
However, Wenger concedes a deal is some way from being completed.
“We need one more body at least and he is one of the candidates but nothing is done at all so it is very premature to speak about him joining us” said the manager, who had an initial £5m bid rejected for the 30-year-old.
“How far down the road we are with it depends on how long the road is. But at the moment it would be very premature to say Squillaci is joining us.”
wenger should take buy west ham upson, formerly from arsenal. he is also aged 30.
wenger prefer france players.
I know, just like rafa likes to sign spanish players.
A statement on the Sevilla website read: "Defender Sebastien Squillaci is tonight travelling to London to have a medical at Arsenal, the club he will be transferred to after an agreement was reached by the two clubs pending the results of the medical."
skysports
