Singapore defeated 10-man Montenegro 3-2 in a thrilling game to qualify for the semi-final of the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Boys’ under-15 football tournament.
The Cubs surprised the 5,850 roaring fans barely three minutes into the game when striker Suhaimi Muhaimin scored after he slotted the ball past the onrushing Montenegro goalkeeper Marko Kordic.
But Montenegro struck back six minutes later when their skipper Nebojsa Kosovic delivered a harmless looking free-kick into the Singapore penalty area which fooled Cubs custodian Fashah Rosedin and found its way into goal.
Montenegro then took the lead in the 22nd minute from Kosovic’s penalty kick after defender Illyas Lee was adjudged to have raised his boot too high when challenging Aleksandar Boljevic for the ball.
But Singapore bounced back to score the equaliser from skipper Jeffrey Lightfoot’s towering header minutes before half-time.
The turning point came in the 63rd minute when Montenegro midfielder Nickola Jovanovic was sent off. Referee Wilmar Roldan showed him the red card after he punched Mazlan Ammirul while they were challenging for the ball.
With a draw looking imminent, Cubs midfielder Brandon Koh brought the partisan crowd to its feet when he scored the winning goal in the 75th minute, courtesy of a careless mistake from Montenegro defender Danilo Sarkic.

They will improve and when there is international matches, recall all the players back home. There are many countries they can go, eg. Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, china, S Korea, or middle east, Australia too. Send them there! Govt should spend money to groom our locally born players!!!!!!!!!
Now this is what i call singapore.
You got Malay, Indian, and Chinese and that ang moh captain.
you feel the joy of the players because you can relate to the team.
And these young boys dare to play football!
Unlike the fucking senior team.
the majority players are the main factor
I dare say, this youth team can play football alright!
Especially Brandon and no.10.
They weren't like the seniors who can only zham long ball.
and there was only one FT in their team woots!
That one is SG borned Eurasian leh not FT... haha
But for most of them, this might probably be the last time they play football at an International stage as most parents would have prefer their children to focus on their studies instead.
Not being a racist here but you'd probably see the same thing for the senior team a few years down the road:
1. Lack of spectrum of races playing for Singapore apart from the Malays
2. Influx of Foreigners-turned-Singaporean under "Foreign Talent Scheme"
3. Never to venture further than ASEAN football scene
