Up for the battle: Liverpool have revived their interest in Carlton Cole
Liverpool have revived their interest in West Ham striker Carlton Cole and made an inquiry for Bayern Munich's £30million-rated striker Mario Gomez.
Sportsmail revealed Sunderland's interest in Cole yesterday and Liverpool are back in the frame despite being quoted £15m by West Ham earlier this month.
Sources in Germany also last night revealed that the Anfield side had asked to take 25-year-old Gomez on a season-long loan but his wages of £125,000 a week are a huge stumbling block.
Gomez, the most expensive player in German football, was expected to join Real Madrid before the end of the window but the deal looks to have been shelved by the Spanish giants until next summer.
Anfield target: Mario Gomez is wanted by Liverpool
I need help: Roy Hodgson wants someone to take the goal burden off Fernando Torres
Liverpool want a striker to take the burden off Fernando Torres's shoulders. They have been rebuffed in their efforts to sign PSV Eindhoven's Ola Toivonen and hope to be armed with more cash from Javier Mascherano's sale.
They can offer around £6.5m for Cole but, while the player would want the move, West Ham will want a lot more cash.
Liverpool still need to sign a left-back but are also considering deals for Lille utility player Mathieu Debuchy and Real Madrid's Mahamadou Diarra. Juventus, meanwhile, are interested in Sotirios Kyrgiakos
They got enough money for Gomez meh?
the interests in such players are signs that liverpool are going in the wrong direction.
they want carlton cole? the guy who cant score and misses penalty kicks consistently?
and mario gomez seems inconsistent, and is generally poor
Big guns: Arfa could be heading for Liverpool
Liverpool are ready to pounce for Marseille star Hatem Ben Arfa if Javier Mascherano clinches a move to Barcelona.
Classy Ben Arfa, who can play centrally or on the left wing, is not a direct replacement for Anfield's Argentine rebel, but the sale of Mascherano would free up funds to swoop for the £6.5million-rated France international.
Roy Hodgson has already signed Denmark international Christian Poulsen from Juventus to toughen up his midfield and is also considering a cheap move for Real Madrid's tough-tackling Mahamadou Diarra.
But Ben Arfa would add more creative quality. Werder Bremen have agreed a fee with Marseille, but the 23-year-old would prefer to play in the Barclays Premier League and went on strike when a loan move to Newcastle United was blocked earlier this month.
The Geordies appear to be out of the running, but sources in France insist Ben Arfa was on Merseyside for talks on Tuesday.
'I want to play in the Premier League because my time in the French League has passed,' he said.
Wantaway: Liverpool rebel Mascherano sits out last week's match against Trabzonspor
Manchester United and Everton have previously shown interest and his agent has contacted several clubs in England, but Liverpool appear to be favourites for his signature.
Mascherano is desperate to quit Anfield, but Barcelona's first bid of about £12m and former Arsenal midfielder Alexander Hleb was rejected.
Hodgson is not keen on Hleb - at least not at Barca's £4.5m valuation - and Liverpool want a straight £18m cash deal.
Reports in Catalonia say the champions of Spain are now prepared to pay close to that, but only if about £4m is in add-ons.
Liverpool also want to add a new striker.
once they sell Mas
i think they gt enough $$ to buy gomez

why not? Liverpool good reputation reh... got Gerrad + torres + reina as well.
