Carlton Cole: Attracting transfer interest
West Ham United have turned down a deadline day £9 million bid for England striker Carlton Cole.
Sunderland and Stoke also bid £9 million, plus £3 million in add-ons, for Cole, but the centre forward would only have quit Upton Park for a bigger club.
West Ham were made aware of Liverpool's interest, initially reported exclusively by Soccernet, only tentatively through third parities.
Ryan Babel had been tipped to sign for the Hammers in a swap deal, but he now seems set to head for Tottenham in a £10 million transfer.
West Ham are also interested in signing a goalkeeper and Roma's Brazilian No. 2 Doni is top of their wishlist.
The 30-year-old has been told he can leave Italy with Bogdan Lobonc and Julio Sergio favoured between the posts for the Serie A side and could arrive at Upton Park on loan. Doni has also been linked with Portuguese side Benfica and Manchester City as well.
Two players who will not be leaving Upton Park are Scott Parker and Matthew Upson, who have committed their futures to the club, for the time being at least.
Carlton Cole: Attracting transfer interest
Liverpool tried to loan Carlton Cole until Christmas because they couldn't finance a permanent deal unless they sold Ryan Babel, according to Soccernet sources close to the attempted transaction.
The approach to sign Cole took place at 3pm on the final day of the transfer window, just three hours before it closed, with Liverpool only prepared to offer the Hammers £9 million for Cole if they could sell Babel to Tottenham Hotspur for £10 million, but that deal eventually collapsed.
West Ham were left waiting for Liverpool to try to offload Babel, and as the deadline drew closer, the Hammers ran out of time to find a replacement for Cole.
In the end, it seems Pool were so desperate to sign an English player that as long as the guy is English or home grown will do... Cos apart from Carlton Cole, they even tried for Peter Crouch, Luke Young and last min Bobby Zamora...
Oh well, at least they got Paul Konchesky... And together with Carragher, Johnson, Gerrard, Cole & Brad Jones, they have at least 6 English / Home grown players to make up forthe 8 required...
hey as long as he's better than ngog why not??
I'm surprised they didn't try for kevin davies who just scored his 100th league goal...
