SINGAPORE: Indian National Football League champions Mahindra United shot down Singapore Armed Forces FC 2-0 in their opening Group E match in the AFC Cup at Choa Chu Kang Stadium on Tuesday.
A first half penalty by Mahindra skipper Yusif Yakubu and an Andrews Pomeyie strike seven minutes from time helped the Indian side leave the island republic with three precious points.
An hour-long downpour which ended just before the match kicked off ensured slippery playing conditions but it was the visitors, more used to the hot and dry conditions in Mumbai, who created the first clear cut opportunity.
A poor pass out of the SAFFC defence in the 26th minute was intercepted by Lukram Singh who found Yakubu free on the left side of the box. The Ghanaian forward pulled the ball back for strike partner Pomeyie only to see his countryman balloon the shot over with just the goalkeeper to beat.
Stung by the close call, SAFFC pushed forward and were denied twice in quick succession by Sandip Nandy in the Mahindra goal on the half-hour. The goalkeeper punched clear a thunderous volley from Therdsak Chaiman and then denied Aleksandar Duric with his legs after the big Australian was left unmarked inside the box.
Another defence-splitting pass from Lukram Singh in the 35th minutes found Pomeyie who went down inside the box under challenge by Faizal Aziz. Qatari referee Abdulla Mohamed Balideh pointed to the spot and Yakubu netted the penalty to put Mahindra ahead.
SAFFC were the early aggressors in the second half with Duric heading narrowly past the right post after meeting a Mustaqim Manzur cross in the 55th minute while Nandy denied Chaiman again two minutes later with a diving save.
Moments after Duric sent another header the wrong side of the post, Yakubu came close to doubling MahindraÂ’s advantage in the 76th minute but his close range effort from a narrow angle was blocked by Sharil Jantan.
With SAFFC pushing more men upfront for the equaliser, Mathew Sushanth found plenty of space for a run down the right before squaring the ball for Pomeyie to sidefoot home to make it 2-0 for the visitors in the 83rd minute.
Only the winner from Group E and the best second placed team from groups D, E and F will qualify for the quarterfinals. The other teams in Group E are Hong KongÂ’s Happy Valley and New Radiant from the Maldives. -
