I feel that this problem is getting serious in sg..rising from merely fashion to hurting themselves

I think to me emo is more of just an expression of feelings not towards the suicidal side or pathetic side. Well...its quite prevalent in our society, especially towards the youngsters and teens. There's nothing much we can do or prevent it from happening. But i can say that...it's just another phase in life that most of us will have to go through no matter what. Other than that...being suicidal is stupid...so i think its also just so childish...because you are not thinking about others and most importantly yourself. Hurting yourself will never solve anything and it will only aggrevate the situation. So just know that its all part and parcel of growing up.

but i think that this kinda stuff is really more about the way one thinks/attitude rather than how he dresses/looks. 
though of course nowadays pple are more than ready to dump you into one of those emo/prep/jock type groups... -

This kind of venting culture has been around for a very long time........it's just the name keeps changing. Every culture/race and what-have-you will have folks and trends like these. E.g. Punk (Brit).
