LOCAL men, paid to marry women from China who come here for prostitution, are now demanding more money from their wives to keep quiet about the womenÂ’s illegal activities, Sin Chew Daily and China Press reported.
Quoting MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Michael Chong, the dailies reported yesterday that such men were now demanding a monthly payment of RM5,000.
“The women said their initial agreement with their husbands was to pay them between RM300 and RM500 monthly to keep quiet,” Chong said.
Unable to bear the pressure of their husbandsÂ’ blackmailing attempts, a number of them have run away and gone into hiding.
Chong said such cases came to light after some of the men approached the department to help locate their missing wives.
Sin Chew Daily quoted Chong as saying that he became suspicious when some of the husbands who approached him for help did not want their stories or wedding photographs published in the papers.
The department subsequently discovered that the women just could not afford to continue paying their husbands.
> Nanyang Siang Pau in its editorial lauded the GovernmentÂ’s offer of RM50 to women as an initiative for them to go for annual breast examinations.
It said that although the amount was not much, it would help low-wage earners.
The daily noted that one out of every 19 women in the country would be diagnosed with breast cancer.
“The cure for breast cancer is early detection,” it said, adding that the chances of surviving the disease would be higher.
