Family in trouble after he elopes
May 06, 2007
For two years, he borrowed from loansharks to keep a mistress and even bought her a Toyota Vios.
When he couldn't pay off the debts, Malaysian retiree Mr Huang Guang Shui, 61, (names in hanyu pinyin) eloped with his lover two months ago, leaving his diabetic wife and children to deal with the creditors.
His son Mr Huang Bing Quan, 37, told Malaysian daily China Press that he had paid the loansharks more than RM500,000 (S$222,700) - debts which his father had accumulated in the last two years.
He said that he sold property and borrowed from friends.
His father had repeatedly promised to leave his lover. Two months ago, his father even sought forgiveness by kneeling in front of him and Datuk Michael Chong, head of the Malaysian Chinese Association's (MCA) Public Services and Complaints department.
Soon he went back on his word.
LOANSHARK THREATS
On Thursday, the younger Mr Huang announced his decision to severe ties with his father at a press conference held at the MCA.
He said his family has stayed away from their Cheras home in fear. The loansharks have poured superglue into the lock of their front door and threatened to burn their house down.
He said he had seen SMSes sent by his father to the mistress. 'One of the messages from her read, 'If you don't buy it for me, I won't be friends with you anymore'.'
The mistress is said to be in her 40s and has shifted house three times.
The younger Mr Huang had taken over their family's vehicle maintenance business from his father.
He said: 'Even my son has learnt to say 'Ah Long (Chinese for loanshark) is here.'
