Lesson 1: Claim the moral high ground
Highlighting the moral reason for your attack is imperative to giving your capos a persuasive argument for following your lead. Always have a better story than the other guy and always be shouting it from the rooftops. Most people believe that the Greeks went to Troy to save Helen, but they really went to loot and to pillage and to till the fertile Trojan plain for the next thousand years. However, Helen was a righteous enough reason for the public.
The last man on the street who fights for you should be able to repeat verbatim the unequivocal need for the war. This will not only build confidence in your capos but also their families, who risk losing everything for taking a step across the usual border of what's acceptable. The message that you use to charge the troops with need not be entirely true, but no one, including yourself, should ever be allowed to speak ill of the cause. Those who do should be swiftly quieted and turned into a scapegoat. -

Lesson 2: Maintain normal appearances

Allies can argue your case in places where you cannot be. Should another family or business be attacking you, the pity card can be played in acquiring allies, but itÂ’s more likely that theyÂ’ll want to get a piece of your action. No one is going to help you on pure idealistic reasons, so make great promises of future contracts and be willing to grease palms. -

Lesson 4: Mentally prep your team
Advertise the situation as a fight for survival to make your people feel the squeeze. If someone is closing in on your block and your region of income, make the team aware of a constant threat, a threat that is unrelenting and intends to see your group disbanded or destroyed. Do not prime the pump too often and flood their good sense, but increase the tension to a sustainable level by mentioning the threat, and then repeat the threat day after day. Do not, however, whip them into a frenzy and get them calling for blood. An angry mob has no direction and, moreover, quickly loses their punch due to exhaustion.
Lesson 5: Reward discipline
The cynical and the lazy can poison the motivation of those who are willing to follow orders to the end. Remove any capos who express disappointment or lack of heart, and replace them with respected soldiers who are competent and hungry for an advanced rank. Usually, making an example of one bad apple is enough to clarify the seriousness of the endeavor, since most men will do anything to keep their day job once it is threatened. Remember: While discipline is important, it should not be so Draconian that it makes your people bitter or tired, such that they start to resent the state of war before it even begins. -

Lesson 6: Imagine scenarios of conclusion
Plan ahead for contingencies, so that if the tide turns against you or for you, an assessment can be made on the progress of the job. Disrupting business can create wild changes in the lives of those around you, as they are often affected negatively. Your capos and soldiers need to see markers of accomplishments or reports of positive progress. Also, an endpoint should be defined, along with ideas for a final term of agreement or truce, with such things as percentages and territory being outlined therein. Only a sociopath desires to stay at war indefinitely. Only an idiot enters a war without thinking about its end.
Final Lesson: Honor the tradition
Those who came before you, whether they founded the company, started the gang or signed the Declaration, they should be lionized with words of valor and duty. Perhaps they were great people, perhaps not, but since they are dead and gone, they are as noble as you dare to claim. Equally important is setting an example of betrayal, marking some person or organization, living or not, with the ultimate tattoo of shame: that of the traitor. The Romans had Brutus, the Americans have Benedict Arnold. Find your traitor. -

Should you or your boss lack that charisma, the battle is half-drowned and will need resuscitation by an expert. It requires optimism and a good salesman to spread the news. The business arrangements should be made behind the scenes since making money is not a motivating factor for the man in the street, even though he will also benefit from winning the war if it brings more wealth to your crew and glory to the tradition.
When the decision is made to cross the line, the rules no longer apply and therefore need no longer be followed. However, it is important to declare that you are following the rules to the letter and it is only your enemy who has chosen to be ruthless and immoral. These are all simply words, but terribly important in convincing observers, allies and, most of all, your own capos and soldiers. -
