"Mindfulness is being aware of what is happening within oneself or to oneself at any given moment of experience.
One's mind is usually focussed outwards in the various projects and undertakings with which one is engaged. From time to time such awareness may arise momentarily, but it quickly gets lost because we don't see any special value or purpose in developing that quality of awareness.
But according to the Buddha, that quality of awareness is the essential foundation or quality of mind that is needed for both concentration and wisdom. To develop that one-pointedness of mind, one must go on attending to a single object with mindfulness again and again. And to see them as they really are, one must examine them with mindfulness.
Mindfulness is that essential mental quality by which we use the beam of awareness to illuminate and to understand our own experience; the bodily and mental experience. This mindfulness must build up momentum through continuous practice. When appropriate strength of mindfulness is developed, it is capable of uncovering the deepest secrets of existence."

Mindfulness is what we need in everyday life, with this quality we will reflect for a moment before we act, and save ourselves from much unwise actions that we will regret later. It also gives us the "circuit-breaker" that stops us from reflex responses, much of our reflex responses are based on greed and "self", and hence needs to be reviewed as to its apropriateness. Formal meditation is of course the training ground for the development of high states of mindfulness, BUT it is the everyday - every moment mindfulness that makes a huge difference to our lives and the lives of those that we touch.

Death is simply the result of being born.
The ultimate cause of death is being Born.

Nourishment for Old Age
In infancy, we rely on mother’s milk and plenty of sleep to live;
In childhood, we need a good diet and exercise to grow;
In youth, we yearn for knowledge and love to sustain us;
In middle age, we require a family and career to feel secure;
In the prime of our lives, success and fame help to prove our worth.
At different stages of our lives, we are nourished if our needs are met. Otherwise, we wither.
What do we need in old age to keep going?
We aren't able to enjoy food because of poor digestion. We can’t exercise as we become frail. Our memory is fading and passion is a thing of the past. Our place in the family is being taken by our children and grandchildren.
We retired long ago, and any success belongs to a bygone era. Acclamation is like a fleeting, ephemeral cloud.
None of these things suits, or can nourish, a person of advanced years.
As firewood is consumed, how do we ensure the fire doesn't go out? We must add fresh timber or the fire will die.
Old age is the end of life. It can only be sustained with new life, a completely fresh, undying life. Only that can provide real nourishment for an elderly person. Without it, we are merely marking time, dragging out old age, waiting for death to take us.
Entrusting ourselves totally to Amitabha Buddha is to obtain real nourishment for our golden years.
