Buddhism is a religion of the mind. Only this. One who practices to develop the mind is one who practices Buddhism.

Animals are also sentient beings just like us.

People who suffer will accordingly
gain wisdom. If we don’t suffer, we
don’t contemplate. If we don’t
contemplate, no wisdom is born.
Without wisdom, we don’t know.
Not knowing, we can’t get free of
suffering - that’s just the way it is.
Therefore we must train and
endure in our practice. When we
then reflect on the world, we won’t
be afraid like before. It isn’t that
the Buddha was enlightened outside
of the world but within the world
itself.

“The goal is not to be better than the other man, but your previous self.”
~Dalai Lama~
-----------------------------------------------------------
All that is subject to arising is subject to ceasing.
When one realises this with wisdom, one attains peace.

In its natural state, the mind is like cool, calm, and clear water. Hateful thoughts overheat the mind. Under their influence, the mind boils like a pot of water, distorting our ability to think clearly or to see things as they are. Our relaxed, calm, and peaceful state of mind dissolves, and the mind simmers with jealousy, vengefulness, malicious thoughts, thoughts of cruelty. We want to cause harm to someone. If we do not intervene with mindfulness, the mind orders the tongue to become active and we wound others with harsh words.
Mindfulness suffocates anger by taking away the fuel it needs to keep burning. When hate fills our mind, we should think: “Hate makes me sick. My thinking is confused. A sick mind defeats the purpose of my meditation. Only with a calm and peaceful mind can I see myself clearly and reach my goal.”
