A guest who visited Fo Guang Shan asked Venerable Master Hsing Yun:
Guest: "Venerable Master, I want to ask you something though it's an impolite question."
Ven. Master Hsing Yun: "What is it that you want to ask?"
Guest: "Master, you are a vegetarian in public, but what if you are alone in your room, do you eat meat?"
Venerable Master Hsing Yun did not answer the guest's question first, instead he asked the guest: "When you drive the car, do you fasten the seat belt for your own safety or just for the police to not come penalize you? If it is for your own safety then either there is or isn't a police, you will do so."
Guest: "Now I understand!"

"The key to meditation is forgetting time and space.
The key to chanting is saying and thinking just the Buddha's name.
The key to sleeping is putting aside all worries.
The key to spreading the teachings is compassion and affinity."

"As long as the root is not rotten, a plant can blossom in the wasteland.
As long as we persevere, we can revive a hopeless situation."
- Venerable Master Hsing Yun

If a person who upholds the name of Guan Shi Yin Bodhisattva enters a great fire, the fire will not burn him, all because of this Bodhisattva's awesome spiritual power.
Further, if a person who is about to be harmed calls out the name of Guan Shi Yin Bodhisattva, the knives and staves of the attackers will break into pieces and he will be saved.
If bandits enough to fill the three thousand great thousand world system infest a dangerous road on which a merchant chief in charge of costly jewels is leading a group of merchants, but among the merchants there is even a single person who says, 'Good men, do not be afraid! You should all single-mindedly recite the name of Guan Shi Yin Bodhisattva. This Bodhisattva bestows fearlessness upon living beings. If you recite her name, you shall surely be saved from these robbers,' and if upon hearing that, the merchants all cry out together, 'Namo Guan Shi Yin Pusa,' then they will immediately be saved because they recited her name.
---Lotus Sutra Chapter 25 (Universal Door of Guan Yin Bodhisattva)

The method of buddha-remembrance through reciting the buddha-name brings salvation to those of the most excellent capacities, and reaches down to the most stupid and dull. In sum, it is the Path that reaches from high to low. Do not be shaken or confused by vulgar views [that Pure Land is only for those of lesser abilities].

Live within hope; believe that there will be a better tomorrow.

The Buddhas respond to those who are sincere.
人有诚心,佛有感应。

There is no single moment of success or failure in life. Because nothing is absolute, elation can turn to misery, and a misfortune can work out to be a blessing.

A drinking session is joyful without forcing. A chess game is successful without competition. A fact should be told without wild talk. A human character grows without desires.
There is no absolute winner or loser in this ever changing world. The only winner is “impermanence.” Hence, winners may not always win and losers may not always lose.

This is so True! Death is a Normal Part of Life. The passing of someone is a reminder for us to see the impermanence of life, practise diligently as we may die anytime".

"Do not overrate what you have received, nor envy others. He who envies others does not obtain peace of mind."
― Buddha

An awakened person sees birth as an extension of a previous life, and death as the start of another life. Birth is not just about living, and death is not just about dying. When we see birth and death as one, what is there to rejoice about or grieve over?
"Aspiring to do good deeds diligently can increase blessings and wisdom as well as forming extensive good conditions.
Leading a simple and thrifty life can enhance wealth as well as good virtues."
It is better to create opportunity for good causes and conditions than to idle away waiting for them to occur.
