Is Buddhism pessimistic?
People sometimes complain that the Buddha focuses an awful lot on suffering. That's because he has a cure. If you had a cure for suffering, wouldn't you want to talk about it too?
The people who are afraid to talk about suffering: they're the ones who don't have a cure. They always try to cover things up, pretend it's not really that bad a situation: "This is the ordinary life that everybody lives, this is as good as it gets - so you might as well enjoy it, make the best of it." That's desperation.
The Buddha wasn't desperate. He was coming from a position of total freedom. He said "Look, if you really sit down and with the proper tools and the proper approach try to discern suffering, get to the point where you really comprehend it, and let go, you've solved all your problems in life."
So, who's pessimistic and who's optimistic? We might say that the Buddha's realistic, but realistic in a way that sees through all the problems the mind creates for itself. Once the mind isn't creating anymore problems for itself, you're free to go wherever you like.

“We need to calm our wandering minds, and find peace in our agitated heart”. When you throw calmness into the confused mind, the confused mind will enter into calmness as well. We all have our delusion, confused thoughts and ignorance. We have to use right thought to correct these illusions. When we feel down and get angry easily we create a lot of irreparable damage, like the angry waves overturning a ship. Only when we are calm and peaceful, can we see the bright and pure self-nature. We can settle the confused mind and return to a peaceful state, feeling the openness of the universe and the bright sky.

The Triple Gem, like a wonderful medicine, cures the illnesses of greed, hate, and ignorance.
The Triple Gem, like starlight or moonlight, guides you to the path.
The Triple Gem, like a ship at sea, carries you across the bitter ocean of rebirth.

The Mahaparinirvana Sutra says:
The mind controls the body. The body does not
control the mind. The mind can fool the body
and it can kill the body. The mind can choose to be
an arhat or it can choose to be in heaven.
It can choose to be a hungry ghost and it
can choose the appearance of its body. The mind
can do anything.
In a mere moment our minds are capable of taking us from heaven to hell and back again. The basis of the mind is Buddha nature. In our deepest” selves” all of us are Buddhas already. However, due to the defilements of greed, anger and ignorance our minds are deluded; rather than enjoy liberation in the resplendent truth of the Tathagata, our minds seek their own bondage in the delusions of samsara.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Our true mind is as vast as all space, brighter than the sun and as wise as all of the Buddhas in the universe. Why settle for less? That mind is yours. It is your inheritance and it is the source of your being. You can only keep yourself from it by willful acts of pettiness and close-mindedness. Recognition of this truth coupled with sincere study of the Dharma eventually will cure the mind of all narrow tendencies.

Picking up and letting go; one must learn to do both with ease.
