Please Take It Back And Eat It Yourself
A man once invited Lord Buddha to come and have a meal at his home. Buddha agreed. When he arrived at the man’s house he found that the man had invited him there for another purpose. The man began to criticize him and abuse him.
The Buddha quietly listened to the man’s verbal attacks. This went on for some time.
Finally, the Buddha said, “Do visitors come to your home often, good man?”
“Yes, they do,” replied the man.
Buddha continued, saying, “What preparations do you make for your guests when they come?” The man replied, “We get ready for a big feast.” The Buddha asked, “What happens if they do not arrive?” The man said, “We eat the food from the feast by ourselves.”
The Buddha said, “Well, you have invited me for a meal but you entertained me with criticism and harsh words. It appears the feast you have prepared for me is abusive words. I do not want to eat from what you have prepared. So” PLEASE TAKE IT BACK AND EAT IT YOURSELF.” With that, the Buddha left the man’s house.
The Buddha realized that the feast that was given to him was not food, but verbal abuse. Rather than turning around, engaging in criticism, and abusing the man in the same way, he refused to partake of the anger. Instead, he left the scene. Thus, the anger was left with the man who was giving it out.
The Buddha advised his disciples who were watching this whole scene, by saying, “Never retaliate in kind to what is done to you. Hatred never ends through more hatred.”
Be Grateful always for everything and everyone at every moment
Share your great love with others whenever you can. Don’t wait and Don’t give any excuses. It is great and feel good to see smiling faces from others and it is so blessed to give rather than to receive.
