Really, I don't see the fuss about it -
what he did was understandable(and even justifiable if what Materazzi said was true and Zidane's conscience permitted him to react the way he did) although inexcusable. Either way, he has paid his dues - if anything, I find it absolutely scandalous(but I must stress I do not think Zidane's red card was not justified) that it took video evidence and the 4th/5th official's intervention(as was the case according to both Lippi and Domenech even though FIFA denied it) to get him sent off simply because that undermines the consistency in the applying of justice in the game where video replays are used selectively in instances which are not dictated by a proper framework justifying where and how they should be used.
Afterall, is there anything to suggest one of the most gifted footballers the game has ever known should not possess the sort of emotions other mortals do? If anything, it's only his conscience that Zidane needs to live with that he ended his career on such an unglamorous note.
Nevertheless, he could have shot Materazzi and it still wouldn't have changed my image of Zidane the footballing genius...
