Sheringham has signed a new one year deal with Man Utd.
MANCHESTER, England, May 18 (Reuters) - Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham signed a new one-year contract with the club on Wednesday.
The 34-year-old former England player had hinted that he would leave the English premier league champions due to a lack of first-team starts.
This season he has been used mainly as a substitute by manager Alex Ferguson, although he did score in each of United's last two games.
But he said on Wednesday: "I'm really pleased that the matter has been resolved and that I am remaining a Manchester United player. All the players retain a real hunger for honours and we want to emulate the success of recent years.
"I've had a fabulous three years with the club and have decided to stay in an attempt to win more trophies."
Sheringham was signed from premier league rivals Tottenham at a cost of 3.5 million pounds ($5.23 million) in June 1997.
He could have left United on a free transfer in the summer and earned a lucrative contract, with Sporting Lisbon reported to be interested, but after a meeting with Ferguson last week decided to stay at Old Trafford.
Ferguson said: "I had a chat with Teddy last week to assure him that he was very much part of my plans for next season. It would have been easy for Teddy to have gone elsewhere but he doesn't want to leave and that's good for all of us."
