Q) What is gymnastics?
A) Gymnastics is a system of exercises designed to develop strength and agility. Anything from as simple as standing or sitting in a proper posture to something as complex as a run of backflips and sommersaults can be classified as a gymnastics exercise. Gymnastics was used by the ancient Roman and Greek military to train their soldiers, as a system of physical conditioning.
Q) What gymnastics is not?
A) Gymnastics is not a competitive sport. What you usually see as "gymnastics" is Artistic Gymnastics and/or Rhythmic Gymnastics. These are competitive sports. There are a few more sports with the term "gymnastics" in them. That is because these sports developed from the system of exercises called gymnastics as described above.
Q) Do I need to learn gymnastics?
A) Yes, it will help you in whatever sports you are involved in. Even if you are not involved in any sport, gymnastics can be used as a fitness activity, just like bodybuilding, swimming or pilates.
Q) Do I need to be a gymnast to do gymnastics?
A) No. As defined above, anybody can do gymnastics.
Q) Do I need any equipment to do gymnastics?
A) No, as long as you have enough space to move your body, like a floor, you can do gymnastics. You do not even need mats.
Q) Do I need to give up my sport to take up gymnastics?
A) No. Gymnastics should be practiced as a supplementary training to your sport to better improve your performance in it.
Q) What have you (the coach) gained from practicing gymnastics in the past years?
A) I have learnt how to move my body properly. I have learnt how to train without equipment. I have learnt how to keep fit without using any equipment.
Q) What is your background?
A) I first started artistic gymnastics when I was in secondary one. Then I stopped at secondary four. After that I took up martial arts. All the while I have been doing gymnastics exercises to keep my fitness level up and this helps me in my sports. I trained as a trainee coach at Singapore Amateur Gymnastics Association. Now I am coaching gymnastics in Prime Gymnastics, a renowned gymnastics club in Singapore. I am also learning Capoeira, a Brazilian martial art.

Q) What will I learn from your gymnastics classes?
A) You will learn exercises that will condition your body, especially upper body. Upper body strength is one area where a large majority of the population is lacking in. You will learn how to move properly, increase your flexibility, improve reaction time.
Q) What will I not learnt from your gymnastics classes?
A) Flips/handsprings and sommersaults, apparatus work and any skills that need bulky and expensive equipment.
Q) Can I have more details of the classes?
A) Duration: at least once a week, flexible time, <12 years old: 1h per lesson
>12 years old: 1.5h per lesson
Fees: $30/h for a one-student class
$20/h per student for a two-student class
No of students: max 2 per class
Venue: studentÂ’s residence or flexible arrangement
