Internet hackers have broken into Euro 2004 referee Urs Meier's website and posted a fake apology to England fans.
Meier, 45, was falsely quoted as saying: "I took money from a senior UEFA official so that the hosts, Portugal, would stay in the tournament.
"I am really sorry, and after all that's happened I can no longer referee at this level. So I am retiring immediately."
The Swiss referee became a national hate figure overnight when he disallowed Sol Campbell's header in the dying minutes of England's Euro 2004 quarter final with Portugal.
England went on to lose on penalties 6-5 and Meier was blamed for England's early exit.
After receiving death threats and over 16,000 abusive emails, Meier was placed under police protection.
The fake apology has since been removed from the website.
