  One person dead after cement truck toppled into canal

  The operator of a cement truck died after the vehicle fell into a canal at Hougang Avenue 10 this evening.

  The canal measured about 3 to 4 meters deep, and 15 meters wide.

  The civil defense force says it received a call shortly before 6 pm.

  After arriving at the scene, SCDF crew found the driver trapped with his head pinned between the seat and the cabin roof located above the driver's seat.

  Mr Tan, who lives nearby, relates what he heard.

  "There was a very loud sound, like stones dropping on a zinc roof. Plus there was someone screaming, it was very loud."

  Rescuers managed to remove the victim by cutting open and widening the rear panel and roof using hydraulic powered tools.

  The 40-year Chinese man was pronounced dead at the scene.

  I passed by there last evening around 7pm, there was a huge crowd surrounding the canal, saw spotlights being used under the canal, there was construction right beside it.
